Dutch experiences on Sustainable Safety and its implementation for cyclists
In this talk Prof. Wegman will tell the history of the Dutch Sustainable Safety (the Dutch version of the Safe System approach), delving into the main challenges faced, as well as its success factors. He will discuss how it has been evolving over time to accommodate new societal and technological trends as well as the increasing trend of cycling fatalities in the Netherlands. Towards the end of his talk, he will open the discussion for exchanging thoughts on the African perspective on Safe System design and its implementation.
About the speaker
Fred Wegman is an emeritus professor in Traffic Safety at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. He is one of the founders of the Safe System approach in road safety. He served in many activities of international organizations, such as European Commission, FIA, OECD/International Transport Forum, World Bank/GRSF and others. He worked in road safety and carried out training programmes in more than 25 countries. Fred is one of the founders of Delft Road Safety Courses. He was awarded a Royal Order by the King of the Netherlands.
