AfroSAFE webinar June 2024
Can we transfer Safe System practices to African context?
Sweden and Norway are global best performers in traffic safety. To a high degree, the success in these countries is attributed to consistent and persistent implementation of the Safe System / Vision Zero principles into practice, at all levels. Looking back, the road was not always very smooth, mistakes were made, and lessons learnt. In this webinar, we reflect on these experiences, but also discuss how Africa can learn from them, but also which aspects of the Safe System are universally applicable, and which will require adjustments to the local context.
About the speakers
Kenneth Svensson is a special advisor at the Swedish Transport Administration. With 30 years of experience, he has profound knowledge on road safety and the Vision Zero. He works with data collection and in-depth analysis of fatal crashes, and suicide prevention within the transport system.
Kenneth Svensson has been a part of the Vision Zero Academy since its foundation as a permanent part of the Swedish Transport Administration in 2019. He was a part of the Programme Committee of the Vision Zero Conference held in Stockholm, in 2023.
Tor-Olav Nævestad heads the research group ‘Safety and Resilience’ at the Institute of Transport Economics in Oslo, Norway. He has been working on projects related to safety culture, safety management and regulation among companies and authorities in the transport sector and in high-risk sectors. One of the key themes in his research has been to develop an understanding of how the safety culture concept can be applied to private and professional road users, and how this understanding can be used to develop measures aiming to improve road safety.
Aliaksei Laureshyn is Associate Professor in traffic safety at Lund University, Sweden. His primary research interests deal with theory and practical use of pro-active methods in road safety analysis. Other research interests include emerging technologies for data collection in traffic, policy and practice in road safety work, particularly in the view of Vision Zero/Safe System paradigm.
