AfroSAFE webinar November 2024
Using crowdsourced data to enhance estimation of non-motorized traffic volume
The number of pedestrians and bicyclists using infrastructure is crucial for safety analysis and for devising potential safety improvements. Traditional methods for measuring non-motorized traffic can be costly and difficult, especially for network-level planning.
The rise of crowdsourced data from fitness tracking apps has gained interest for providing cheaper, high-resolution data for planning cycle infrastructure. However, practical issues remain, such as how to integrate these data with other sources and whether they accurately represent the broader cycling population.
This presentation shares findings from a Michigan study on using crowdsourced data to estimate bicycle volume. Results show that with higher penetration rates, this data can reliably estimate bicyclist volume, though biases may exist in the app users’ demographics compared to the general population.
