The history of transportation and road safety research

As someone who has been in the field of road safety research for over 50 years,  Professor Alfred Shalom Hakkert (Technion, Israel) is well-qualified to give an overview of the history and the evolution in thinking about road safety. He will also give some thoughts about the changes in the field in the view of recent developments in transportation and sustainability.

About the speaker

Alfred Shalom Hakkert is an Associate Professor at the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel. He  has been involved in road safety research since 1970 and, though he retired in October 2006, is still active in the field. Till June 2011 Shalom served as the Scientific Director of the Ran Naor Foundation for the Advancement of Road Safety Research.

Shalom Hakkert has published over 100 journal papers and research reports on a wide variety of safety topics, including the evaluation of road safety measures, statistical analysis of road accidents, the study of the interaction of highway design and road safety.

In May 2008 Professor Hakkert was awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from Hasselt University, Belgium, for outstanding contributions to the field of road safety. In 2016 he co-edited ITF-OECD report on the Safe System Approach, which later received the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.
