Prehospital care of traffic-crash victims

Providing medical assistance to traffic‑crash victims quickly and in a qualified manner is crucial for their best possible recovery and often for their survival. This issue is particularly important in the context of low‑ and middle‑income countries (LMICs), where emergency‑service resources are limited and first aid is often delivered by lay responders.

This talk presents a systematic approach to building prehospital trauma care systems that are based on understanding the science of early care of the injured. It discusses key components such as evidence-based intervention, organisation and management, capacity development, data collection, transportation and communication, as well as ethical and legal considerations.

This talk will help traffic safety researchers view the field from a different perspective, reminding us that behind every number in traffic-injury statistics is a real person in pain—someone whose suffering could have been prevented.
