The ethics of traffic safety
Given the large numbers of people who are killed and severely injured in road traffic every year, traffic safety should be a major topic in ethical discussions. This lecture opens up discussions on some questions that are too seldom asked: Why do we accept risks on roads that we wouldn’t accept in most other places? Why are motor vehicles so constructed that they can be driven at illegal and highly dangerous speeds? Why are bicycle helmets not obligatory, just like seat belts? Is there a conflict between personal liberty and traffic safety?
