Sexual Harassment in Public Transport in Zambia: Prevalence, Challenges, and Interventions

Sexual harassment in public transport is a widespread but underreported issue globally, as well as in Zambia, disproportionately affecting women and girls. This form of gender-based violence compromises personal safety, dignity, and mobility rights of passengers, yet there is limited empirical evidence and policy action to address it effectively. In this webinar presenter will discuss the burden of and contributing factors of sexual harassment in Zambia’s public transport system and highlighting evidence-based interventions that can enhance the personal safety of passenger and promote gender-equitable commuting environments. The study revealed widespread experiences of sexual harassment in public transport.  86% of respondents reported personally experiencing harassment, while 97% witnessed such incidents, underscoring its pervasive nature. The study underscore urgent need for multi-faceted interventions: Public awareness campaigns, strengthened legal frameworks, and stricter enforcement of penalties are critical to address  sexual harassment in public transport.Practical safety measures: Bystander intervention training, enhanced security (for instance; surveillance, safe zones), and improved reporting procedures are essential for immediate impact.
